On a run the other day I had a thought: Could a modified CVT be the key to having a fast accelerating car? To me it seems like current CVTs are designed solely for fuel economy, so they are slow to react and keep the transmission in a higher ratio, one not designed for acceleration. Since CVTs are infinitely variable, couldn't you modify one to be behind in gear ratios, instead of ahead? While accelerating you could have it increase the gear ratios continuously to keep it rest at the red line or the peak of the torque curve. Wouldn't that make it faster than anything else, albeit boring as hell?

That's what I've often wondered, too. Seems like something that would be tunable. My parents' Maxima has a CVT and when it's in "sport mode" it revs higher, but it also adds "steps" to simulate gears.
